The twin concrete towers of Akureyrarkirkja above its broad central stairway

Akureyrarkirkja: the church, stairway and a hillside walk

Visit Akureyri’s twin-towered church with a clear approach, realistic interior-access expectations and a café or garden extension that suits the conditions.

A wide view of Akureyri and its harbour below the snow-covered mountain slopes

A first weekend in Akureyri: art, Old Town and the fjord

Give Akureyri two adaptable days, linking its central cafés and church with Old Town history, the garden and a separately planned fjord outing.

A large cruise ship at Akureyri harbour, distinct from the smaller whale-watching vessels

Akureyri harbour and whale watching: choosing a fjord outing

Use Hof for a short waterfront walk, or plan a separate Eyjafjörður whale-watching trip with the right departure, boat expectations and return time.

A heart-shaped red traffic light beside street signs in Akureyri

Akureyri on foot: heart lights, Art Street and local cafés

Follow a focused central walk from the heart traffic lights to a historic café and Art Street, with a museum or guided tasting as a separate choice.

Spacious interior view of Bibliotheca Alexandrina showcasing wooden study areas and computers.

Visiting the Bibliotheca Alexandrina: tours, tickets and exhibitions

Give the Bibliotheca its own visit instead of treating it as a roadside photograph. A library tour and one carefully chosen exhibition make a more satisfying plan than trying to cover every institution in the complex.

A coastal view of Alexandria's promenade featuring iconic architecture and a vibrant cityscape.

A first weekend in Alexandria: harbour, ruins and the Bibliotheca

Build two days around compact outings: the Eastern Harbour and Downtown first, then the Bibliotheca and a separate Roman-site visit. Stanley is an optional coastal finish, not a compulsory cross-city walk.

View of ancient Roman ruins against a modern urban backdrop, capturing history's blend with contemporary architecture.

Kom el-Dikka: reading Alexandria’s Roman quarter

At Kom el-Dikka, look beyond the curved theatre seating. The remains of streets, baths and teaching spaces make this a compact introduction to the workings of a late Roman city.

Sunny view of the majestic Citadel of Qaitbay in Alexandria, Egypt.

Qaitbay Citadel and Alexandria’s Eastern Harbour

Use Qaitbay as a focused fortress visit, followed by a short harbour look. The defensive architecture and fishing-boat views are enough for an outing without adding every waterfront sight.

Scenic view of Stanley Bridge overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, a famous landmark in Alexandria, Egypt.

Stanley Bridge: a short Alexandria coastal outing

Stanley works best as a short visit to one bay, with a bridge crossing and a pause for the Mediterranean view. Travel here separately from the Eastern Harbour instead of trying to walk the whole Corniche.

The blue patterned dome and crescent finial of King Abdullah I Mosque in Amman.

Amman’s blue mosque and Jabal al-Weibdeh

Make King Abdullah I Mosque and Jabal al-Weibdeh a separate neighbourhood outing from the ancient hilltop. Keep the blue dome as the first anchor, then use a short walk or ride towards galleries, old stone houses and a slower look at contemporary Amman.
